Forward bends help calm the nervous system and relieve stress whilst also toning the abdominal muscles and stimulating the abdominal organs. They allows us to stretch the entire back of the body building strength and flexibility in the spine whilst releasing any accumulated tension in the neck and upper and lower back.
Forward bends in a vinyasa flow, a yoga sequence, can bring a welcome pause because of their ability to calm the mind and cool the body, taking the mind to a more receptive and intuitive state and allowing the body to yield and release into the posture.  These postures activate the sacral chakra, Swadishthana, the water chakra which is responsible for the control of emotions allowing us to learn to act with wisdom and consciousness.
